Explore:my word of the year

This year I decided to enroll in Lifebook 2015 with Tamara Laporte.
If you have never heard of Lifebook, it is an online course that runs for the duration of the year. It is a weekly video art lesson, with a different teacher every week. It is hosted on the creative community run by British mixed media artist Tamara Laporte, also known as Willowing, along with her assistant Gracie Howle.
My first Lifebook lesson, Beacon of Light, taught by Tamara Laporte

I discovered Tam on YouTube a couple of years ago and took a few of her online courses.
She is a wonderful teacher, extremely generous and,-a big plus in online art teachers-funny and not annoying!Lol!

At first I was resistant to her Lifebook course because to be honest she is very new-agey and does a lot of meditation and you-universe stuff.
If you have followed my blog for any length of time you know that I am Roman Catholic and I don't go in for any of that kind of spirituality. I am not going to deride it in any way, or say anything negative about it-it's just not my bag. I am very happy and firm in my catholic faith-in fact, grateful to be a catholic. But I don't think there are enough positive and empathetic offerings in the world and that is basically what Tam does.
Seeds of Love, also taught by Tam

So after hemming and hawing for 2 years I finally took the plunge and I am so grateful I did.
In just less than 3 short months I have learned so much. I find I am perfectly able to approach the lessons for the art, and the spirituality is not at all pushed on me.

One of the first things you do is decide on a word for the year.
Something that will be your focus.
For me I am approaching this artistically, so my word is explore.
Lifebook lesson taught by Lynn Whipple

After a lot of thought and prayer I find that this is the perfect focus for me this year. I have basically been a working artist for 15 years now, but where I started and where I am now are so completely different, it is hard for me to present anything to my customers that makes any sense. After all, I am running an art business so I have to try to find my way.

I began in primitives, but for some time now I have not been inspired there. For most of my life I have loved history and yesteryear, and nostalgic looks at the past. It fit very well with my main focus which was family life and raising children. I decorated my house in prims, the deep rich colors, the browns and golds and deep reds. But eventually this palette became too limited for me.
Most of my kids are grown and gone now, and then I turned 50.
There is something about turning 50 that makes you take a look at your life. What am I doing? Where am I going? What am I going to do from here forward?
And I realized that from the time I was a child I always wanted to be a painter.
So I decided life is short and if I'm ever going to try to do it, now is the time.
original work in my art journal

I looked around and decided:I needed color.
I needed to expand my palette to cheerful and happy colors that I would love to work with.
I have always also loved the colors of the ocean, the greens and blues and sandy yellows.
But I also wanted to work with brights, cheerful colors that make me happy.
And I also realized that if I was going to paint I was going to have to start right where I was at. So after 15 years of making dolls, I am now painting portraits. Whimsical portraits from my imagination, because I still love innocence and wholesomeness and the purity of childhood.

So that is where I am now. Exploring color and new mixed media techniques, and trying to figure out how to translate that into something I can still offer the world.
Queene of Hearts

I still make dolls.
I will probably never stop making them. I find that the more I explore other art forms, the more I am inspired to then translate those ideas to my dolls. So now my dolls are a little more artsy. But they will always be folky-I still really enjoy folk art. My art is just evolving into a little bit more contemporary folk than primitive.
And for now that is just how I like it.

I'm Taking a Workshop with...

Sue Spargo!

Sue is most definitely my favorite quilt teacher. I love her vibrant colors and her whimsical designs. I especially love the beautiful embroidery stitches she uses to embellish her wool quilts. If you are not familiar with Sue, check out her website for some really wonderful and fun quilts!
 Her work is truly stunning!

The workshop is next Monday and Tuesday(2 whole days! Squeeee!!!).
The project is called bird on a branch.

There is some pre-work to be completed before class begins.

This little guy, my favorite pincushion will be coming with me.

As will all of these supplies.

So I have to get busy and get my pre-work finished. The bckground is pieced together and then I have to applique the tree, bird, leaves and berries.

So excited!!

New Art!

I joined LIFEBOOK 2015 this year and boy am I loving it! I am learning so much and every Monday new artsy goodness in my inbox! Yay!

I am not really interested in the self help and healing stuff- I admit I usually skip over that jazz. I am just not a person with a lot of angst, and I love my catholic faith, so it doesn't really appeal to me. But I am sure it is great for a lot of people, and anything that helps people be happier and create more beautiful art is a positive in my book.
Just not enough of that in the world!

So anyways, on to the eye candy:

All of the above are January art journal entries.. I probably should really call is ART PRACTICE, because as you can see I'm not really a big journaler in terms of words. I really am just practicing my skills and trying new techniques. It is more art exploration for me.

This one above  is from the Documented Life Project. And again, this is the only planner page I have made all year so far. I'm not much of a planner person. I love creating the page but then I'm done and I never go back to it. Ha!

And this little beauty is called
"Longing"
This little girl was originally done in an art journal. I loved her so much I did her again on larger watercolor paper.
Fabriano Artistico Hot Press 140lb
to be exact. My favorite paper OF ALL TIME!!!

OK I don't want to over burden this post with pics. I will try to keep adding more to get caught up.

Queene of Hearts and update!

Its almost time for some new folk art and I haven't even had a chance to post a pic of my last doll,
Queene of Hearts!
She is sold but I thought you might enjoy some pictures:

Still for sale are my collage hearts. These are great little bowl fillers all year round and they each feature a loving little word. I love filling my home with things that make me smile at a glance, don't you?

For sale at PFATT Marketplace until March 10.

I have been SO remiss in updating my blog. I will try to do better.
Mostly I have been painting like a crazy woman! I am absolutely obsessed with mixed media painting-mostly girls. I have always loved doing faces, I'm sure that is a big part of what attracted me to dollmaking so many years ago. I find that painting has informed my dollmaking in a very  satisfying way. My doll faces are becoming more vibrant, which I am loving.
With painting, I also am able to explore color in a really exciting way. As the years went on I found I was unable to limit myself to the primitive palette.
Don't get me wrong,
I have always loved primitives, and still do.
But as an artist I eventually found them limiting.
What is man but a being who must change and grow, right?

If you would like to see my paintings and whats going on in my studio follow me on Instagram. I post almost every day!

Fairy Queene of Hearts

Hey guys!
Happy 2015!!

Just wanted to pop in and let you know I've got a new doll for sale coming up on the
Yay!!

This is my Fairy Queene of Hearts!
She is a perfect mash up of my two current obsessions-mixed media paintings and cloth dolls!

I have been painting and art journaling a lot lately. But I still really enjoy working on dolls.
I just love doing faces, either on dolls or in a journal.
Here are some of my painted faces:

They are so much fun to do!
These are from my art journal, but I hope to do some as paintings for sale soon.
Here's another one:
This is a painting I made for one of my kids for Christmas.
It is layers of collage and paint on watercolor paper.
See the circuit board in the background?
When I found that I knew it was perfect because my son (who I painted this for)
is a computer engineer.
This painting is about creatures and their longing for their maker.
My son loved it!
Hope to see you on PFATT On the 10th!

Blessings,
Annie
