I am doing a sort of study on color tinting. You know, its when you add color to your stitchery with either crayons or colored pencil. This is a design by
Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill.
It was lots of fun to do!
Then I decided to try it on a design of my own. I began with crayons, coloring in the whole background with white and then adding the color.
Then I added the stitching and some colored pencil detail. I couldn't stop there and ended up using watercolor pencils.
When I am finished the whole thing will be heat set with and iron, pressing from the back onto a piece of scrap muslin (in case some of the color comes off)

The coloring adds such dimension and detail to your embroidery project. I am wondering what will happen if it is washed.
This is totally cool......I love it!!!! I am going to have to try this...my brain is exploding with ideas!!!
Karen I believe I read somewhere that it can be hand washed in cold with a mild detergent.I'm not sure I would be that brave! LOL! I really wouldn't use this technique on anything I was planning to wash, I would just reserve it for a wall hanging or something like that.xx~annie

love this look. Helen Stubbings of Hugs'n Kisses (AU) has a wonderful technique called Colourque. She creates faux applique that is amazing. She uses Folkart Textile Medium on the penciled areas to keep the color from washing out. She also recently did a fantastic stitchery workshop on her blog-Hugs From Helen. You should check her out.
Love the results of your color tinting experiment! I am going to try crayon tinting on embroidered feed sack towels to give them a real vintage look.
I think it's pretty, and I'm excited to know that it can be set with an iron. Great tip!
